How to unblur a photo on iPhone
Start with why the photo is blurry. Portrait background blur can be reduced in Photos, a Live Photo may hide a sharper frame, and a slightly soft shot gains from Sharpness and Definition. Small or low-quality pictures — saved from a chat, cropped or old — are where Snip’s Enhance Quality helps: it rebuilds detail and makes the image up to four times bigger.

Unblur a photo in the Photos app
These fixes are free, work on your iPhone and can be undone at any time with Revert to Original.
Portrait photos
Background too blurry, or the wrong thing in focus? Open the photo, tap the edit button and drag the Depth Control slider, or tap a new focus point (iPhone 13 or later). To remove the effect, view the photo full screen without editing, tap Portrait at the top left and choose Portrait Off.
Live Photos
If motion smeared the moment, open the Live Photo, tap the edit button, then the Live Photo button, move the white frame to a sharper moment and tap Make Key Photo. Looks smeared on purpose? Tap Live at the top left: Long Exposure blurs motion, Live turns it back.
Sharpness and Definition
For a slightly soft shot, tap the edit button, then Adjust, and swipe to Sharpness and Definition. Crisper edges help, but they can’t restore detail the photo never had.

Enhance a blurry photo with Snip
Enhance Quality works on any iPhone or iPad with iOS 15.0 or later. It’s part of PRO and runs on our server, so you need an internet connection.
Open Enhance Quality
In Snip, tap the Enhance Quality tab, then Select image and choose the photo.
Wait for the result
Snip uploads the photo and rebuilds its detail — keep the app open while you see “Doing the magic...”.
Compare
Drag the slider between Before and After. The pixel size of each version is shown on the image.
Save
Tap Save to add the enhanced PNG to Photos, or the share button to send it.

What enhancing fixes well
- Pictures saved from messengers and social media that lost quality
- Small crops and thumbnails you need bigger
- Old low-resolution photos and scans
- Slightly soft shots with small details
Enhance Quality is also next to Save in Snip’s background remover. There it improves the finished image — with the new background, crop and outline — before you save it.
What it can’t fix
- Heavy motion blur or a shot that’s completely out of focus can’t be fully restored by any app.
- The AI predicts detail, so small text, distant faces or license plates may come out different from reality.
- A full-resolution iPhone photo won’t get bigger: the result is about 4096 px on the long side.
On Mac, Snip enhances photos on your device and can upscale ×2 for free or ×4 up to 8192 px. Upscaling images on Mac.
Sharper photos next time
- Wipe the camera lens: a fingerprint on it makes every photo look hazy.
- Tap the subject on the screen to focus on it before you take the shot.
- In low light, hold still for the whole Night mode countdown, or rest the iPhone on something steady.
- Keep Live Photos on: if the moment is blurred, you can pick a sharper frame later.
Photo resolution on iPhone
On supported models, go to Settings → Camera → Formats. Under Photo Mode, choose 12 MP or 24 MP as the default, or turn on Resolution Control (ProRAW & Resolution Control on some models) to take 48 MP photos with more detail to crop into.
Photos or Snip?
Photos fixes blur that comes from the camera’s effects. Snip is for pictures that are small or have lost quality.

Questions about unblurring photos on iPhone
Can you unblur a photo on iPhone?
Partly. Photos can turn off Portrait blur, pick a sharper Live Photo frame and add sharpness. An AI enhancer like Snip rebuilds detail in soft or low-resolution pictures. A shot that’s badly out of focus or smeared by motion can’t be fully restored by any app.
How do I unblur a Portrait photo on iPhone?
Open the photo in Photos, tap the edit button and drag the Depth Control slider to reduce the background blur. To remove the effect completely, view the photo full screen without editing, tap Portrait at the top left and choose Portrait Off.
How do I change the photo resolution on iPhone?
For new photos, go to Settings → Camera → Formats. On supported models, choose 12 MP or 24 MP under Photo Mode, or turn on Resolution Control (or ProRAW & Resolution Control) to take 48 MP photos. For a small photo you already have, Snip’s Enhance Quality can increase its resolution up to four times.
Is there a free way to unblur photos on iPhone?
The tools in Photos are free. Snip’s Enhance Quality on iPhone is part of PRO. On Mac, Snip upscales images ×2 for free, 3 photos a day, and one PRO subscription covers iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Does Enhance Quality work offline?
No. On iPhone and iPad, Snip enhances photos on our server, so you need an internet connection. Snip for Mac enhances and upscales images right on your Mac, even offline.
Why does my photo still look blurry after enhancing?
Enhancing works best on pictures that are small or slightly soft. If the camera focused on the wrong thing or the subject moved, the detail was never captured, and the result can only be a little crisper.
